Fire on our pants
Aug. 26th, 2007 04:28 pmI was trying to get online yesterday but I couldn't get signal from the hotel's wireless.
We got home today. We had fires relatively close to the city and our hotel but didn't find ourselves in danger.
Big patches of land burned, all the way from Kalamata to Tripoli, and some houses too. I don't know if you guys outside of Greece have heard anything, but there's been great damage in various parts of the country. Even in the mountains surrounding Athens, but our house is a long way from all the fires.
So, in short, I'm alive and well. And I've got to start studying today. Blergh.
Hugs,
Anna.

Date: 2007-08-26 03:17 pm (UTC)I made it out of translating a Greek expression: Fire on our (whatever you call the 'sleeves' of a pair of trousers, I went for pants to make it funnier :p) = We're in big trouble.
*goes to change "in" to "on"*
See ya,

Date: 2007-08-26 03:31 pm (UTC)Not just global warming, I'm afraid. The fires are most definitely the work of arsonists. There's no way this catastrophe is just natural.
Thanks for the wishes! Good luck to you too!
Hugs ♥

Date: 2007-08-26 04:43 pm (UTC)thank god you're allright and well.I was starting to get real worried.
Yes, we've heard a lot about the fires. Each time one was striking Greece... and even more these last few days since it was raging through Peloponese and closing on Athens. Seems Olympie's first OG's site's also been damaged.
Seems UE's sending help and canadairs.Wished for low winds and...humidity.
lots of people lost their homes. some their family. some both.
let's hope for lower temperatures.
happy studying! ;)

Re: Relief!!
Date: 2007-08-26 06:54 pm (UTC)I haven't watched the news much today, but I found on a site that the ancient sites in Olympia remained unharmed and that only a few of the surrounding trees were burned. Hopefully that's the case.
(Can you believe I've never been to ancient Olympia? I should be ashamed.)
Thanks for the wishes! :)
Hugs,
Anna.
Re: Relief!!
Date: 2007-08-26 08:25 pm (UTC)Olympia. a instead of e. right.
you know? about you having never seen ancient Olympia site...mum told me the exact same thing "I've never seen it. that's a shame!"
here, they're telling us Greece fires's death toll's reaching in 2-3 days. There's even a village (near Giros? Pyros? whatever) where only one old woman remained after the fire detroyed it. some died. some flew. Some died in their car. But ike she said: "I have no car. Where could hve I gone?"
the worst? she hadn't seen a single people in 2 days. TV crew interviewing her was the first sign of life and humanity she'd encountered.
They also told us that France's sending at least 4 canadairs (from a brigade that's usually fighting fires in Corsica and South of France. so, Aces pilots, basically). President even said, if the situation requires it, he'll send more.
and... you're more than welcome for the wishes! ;)

Date: 2007-08-26 08:45 pm (UTC)Oh, my! I haven't seen the report about that woman. (Near Pyrgos?) It's tragic, really.

Re: Relief!!
Date: 2007-08-27 06:02 am (UTC)tragiquiest part was that he'd just saw her husband died.

Date: 2007-08-26 06:07 pm (UTC)Had to kick myself when I read it, though. I thought the entry title meant you'd been lying about something. ("Liar, liar! Pants on fire!") This despite the fact that I'd just been reading about the fires. (Which had also confused me because I thought the article's headline was talking about Greek Fire, which I'd confused with Roman Candles, and I couldn't figure out why there was so much fuss about a light show.)
In short: I'm an idiot.
But never mind that. Important thing is that you and your family are safe. Stay well.

Date: 2007-08-26 06:53 pm (UTC)Oh, you call that Greek Fire? We still use the Greek-Byzantine name of "υγρό πυρ", or "wet fire", which I also see listed in Wikipedia. Though I'd be more likely to translate "υγρό" as "liquid" - not that "wet" is absolutely wrong, but there's another word that comes closer to it, methinks. Maybe I should go fix it?
Well, whatever. Back to studying for now.
Hugs,
Anna.

Date: 2007-08-27 04:30 pm (UTC)And, actually, once I understood that you were talking about the fires in Greece, I figured out that the topic was supposed to mean that the flames were uncomfortably close. But yeah, I saw your comment to Dave before posting mine above (even if it is still overlapped by that column in IE).
"Liar, liar, pants on fire!" is a common playground taunt in the US. No one knows what it means. Well, I don't, anyway, and I doubt that anyone I know does, either.
On the other hand, there was a fun episode of the old Tick animated series (superhero parody, much fun) where there's a giant monster tearing up The City. The mayor hires a german mad scientist to stop it (he was kind of a running gag for several eps). Scientist says that the monster is rampaging because he's ashamed of being naked. So, to placate the monster, he has the city create a giant pair of pants just outside city limits, with spotlights to attract the monster's attention. He and some city officials go out there with the crew. Scientist starts chanting, "Take him to ze pants. Take him to ze pants..." Meantime, a thunderstorm breaks out. He starts chanting more and more urgently, getting upset that his brilliant idea isn't being put into proper effect. A city official comes up to come him down. "Don't worry, doc. Everything's going to be fine. We've got it under control..." Doc turns around to look at him, and sees that lightning has struck the giant pants, setting them ablaze. "Liar! Liar!! Pants on FIRE!!
Anyway... yeah, go fix Wiki. It needs all the help it can get. ;)

Date: 2007-08-26 07:36 pm (UTC)We hear a lot of the fires on the news. So much destroyed, even lives lost. :( So I hope the situation will get a lot better over the next few days now that Europe is sending their help.
I actually got the title before I figured out the meaning in English. Probably cause I was worried about you...
