Random thoughts

Things I've noticed about myself lately:

- I don't feel sleepy at night. I go to bed mostly because it's very late and I *should* go to bed. (Though it has to be noted that when I *do* go to bed, I sleep almost immediately. Unusual for me.)

- I don't feel hungry. Again, I eat because I *should* eat. (Chocolate is the exception here.)

This must be exams-induced stress, methinks.

I'm listening to a CD Carole had made for me (not the one I was listening to earlier, another one) and at some point it had three consecutive Moby songs. I don't really like Moby, but was too lazy to skip them, so I thought, 'whatever'. Third one was Natural Blues (lyrics here), and I was reminded of how, when it was first out (2000) and the videoclip played at MTV, the older of my two brothers, who couldn't for the life of him figure out the lyrics, had dubbed it "doom-pay doom-pay" because that's what "don't nobody know my" sounded like to him. XD

(Now, Christos never had a knack for English, but seriously, can you make out anything of what Moby sings? Especially in Natural Blues.)

And now for something else, which will probably make me sound at best like I'm fishing for compliments and at worst like I'm terribly conceited, but damn, I have to ask.

(I'm leaving RL aside for this.)

Here on LJ, when I'm unsure/stressed about things like exams, various people often comment on how I'm really smart and I know everything and so I'm bound to do well.

My question is simple: Why do you guys think that? What have I done to merit such a reputation?

And I actually have a very good reason to ask. I won't get into much detail, but suffice it to say that when I first joined #loisclark (I don't know if it went further back; that's when I found out, in any case) people thought of me as I know-it-all. And usually, it was the bad kind of know-it-all; the one who thinks she knows it all but she's far, far from it. A couple of you might be aware of it.

So... what's different here? Is it that I've changed since late 2003, which is when the above took place? Do I *really* come off as a know-it-all, only I'm usually right, therefore, I must be smart? Do you just say it to encourage me? Have I told you that I'm considered smart IRL and you're just following with this? Or is it something entirely different?

Those of you who are 'guilty' of that - please, don't pity me. Tell me the truth, whatever it is. I won't get offended in any case. (Hey, I'm the one who coined "it's okay to be arrogant, as long as you have a good reason to be". :p)

Okay, that's it for tonight. Well, not really, because I could go on, but I want to finish a differential equation I was earlier working on.

Oh God, love. Have I made you feel bad? I didn't mean it in the "OMG SHE'S SUCH AN OBNOXIOUS KNOW-IT-ALL" kind of way, I meant something more like "GAHH SHE'S SO SMART which is a good thing because that means I can make her help me with Spanish homework, yey!. *hugs*

Well, first of all, because you're extremely, extremely serious about your academics. I mean, not like STUDY HARD serious, but you care a good deal about your grades (which are good, which helps with the "smart Anna" thing), and you're fairly intelligent.

Also, you're fucking trilingual. Which is *brilliant*, and quite an accomplishment.

The thing is - the other day, while perusing my HD for original fics, I came across a #loisclark discussion I had saved that reminded me how some of these people used to view me. And then came some comments of that nature in my "wish me luck for Anatomy" post, and now you, so it all added up to this. Really, no need to worry. ♥

Though really, I didn't need sleeplessness to keep me up. *g* I'm (in)famous for staying up late. Though now I should give it up and go to bed, for it is indeed past 2 AM over here and I have to wake up at 10 tomorrow (today).
...Then again, I'm known to go to school with less hours of sleep than that, but I'm trying to be a nice girl. Eh.

I don't think I've told you that you're smart, but I do think it, because you ALWAYS know what to say, Anna, and though that's not that hard over the internet, it's like EXACT right thing, if that makes any sense. And you were so close to winning that award that I can't remember the name of, the one that you were tied for with that other girl. Well, no, since I can't remember what it was, then I shouldn't say that. But you've always come off as intelligent to me, even in comments on other people's journals that I skimmed over, before we friended.

It's probably really stupid of me to judge people like that-- that they sound smart or whatever. Well no, it IS really stupid of me. But you DEFINITELY do not seem like a know-it-all, in the good sense or the bad sense. And I dont think you act like a know-it-all either.

And, as Annie said, you're fucking trilingual!

For me? It boils down to the fact that the other two mentioned in such a perfect phrase: You're fucking trilingual!!!! *g*

That awes me. I remember one of the first times I "met" you (and learned a bit about you). I was *astounded* that I was talking to a 17 (16?) year old who'd mastered EFL. That probably secured you the "really smart" description in my mind. What perpetuates it is the focus and determination I see in you when it comes to grades and learning. I don't remember you at all as the bad sort of know-it-all, so I'm no help there.

Now, a little reflection and explanation (?) of my ability to be awed like that. I'll forever continued to be awed at all the FoLCs I read and talk with on the boards for whom English is their second (or third or fourth!!) language, especially those who are self-taught (and even moreso for those who are self-taught just so they could be an active part of FoLCdom). In talking with some friends and taking some language classes, I've found that quite a few foreign countries require (encourage?) students to take English courses. This known, I should really not be quite as awed, but I am. Also, in addtion to languages, I've found that education standards in general are much higher in other countries than in the US. (You have no idea how much this depresses me. :P) So, I'm generally inclined to think you're smarter for that reason alone.

That said, hearing that you were first in your class in high school and knowing you were officially trilingual at the age of 17 (or was it 18? I'm horrible with dates...), I'd say that qualifies you as being pretty damned smart. ;)

I have trouble believing the education standards in Greece are higher than... uh, anywhere else :p and especially the US. Though in the foreign languages department, I think you're right. We're generally more inclined to study languages because we know we'll *need* them - you can't go very far speaking only Greek. :p

Ok, I must mention something here. I think it's really tacky of whoever to make comments like that in a chat. Fact number one is, we don't actually know each other beyond a blog or a chat. We could all hate each other in real life! But I warn people against making judgements about people you've never met. The fact that we've all swapped words in a chat or a message board doesn't always tell you what you need to know about someone. It just means some people think on their feet faster than others and are witty typers.

For example, I talk about school *all the time*. Maybe everything thinks I'm a know-it-all. Well you know what? My life is that BORING. I have to live in a dumpy city with nothing to do for the next 2.5 years. I wake up, go to school, do my homework, watch tv or read, and go to bed.

As long as your RL friends don't tell you you're a know-it-all, I'd bet you're ok. :) The harsh truth about online relationships is that #loisclark doesn't know me anymore than they know you anymore than they know most of each other. We're not next door neighbors. And actually I don't even know my next door neighbors. The whole point of even being online is just to have fun, and I would say just have a party with the people you get along with, and don't worry about the others.

You have a point there, Jen. I won't judge anyone because, well, I do it myself, but it's true that you can't be the same person IRL and online. Some things just don't get through in both cases.

ok i didnt read everyone else's comments so forgive me if i repeat anyone. obviously i wasnt in on the #loisclark conversations ;p but personally, i do not at all think you come across as a know-it-all. smart, yes. because of the way you talk, the type of words you use, the things you talk about. and yes, the fact that you are so focused on your studies plays a part, i tend to think, someone who cares that much about school must be smart. *shrug* but there's nothing at all wrong with being smart, i like smart people (tho i dont consider myself to be one), it's something i admire. not annoying or obnoxious at all. just means you'd likely be someone i would go to if i had a question in your field ;)

Why are you smart? well your school record speaks for itself tobegin with and because you're awfully mature, wisdomy for your age and an awesome ficwriter to (whatever language). and so on...

how did the anatomy exam go IYHO? maybe you're stressing by obsessing about the questions and what you shouold/ shouldn't have answered?

Well, I was a little worried about Anatomy - my primary goal was just to pass, but when it sank that, yeah, I've passed, but the grade is *really* mediocre, I got a little disappointed. But my parents are happy for me so that helps lift my mood. :)

Wah, I didn't mean you know everything in a bad way, or like you're a know-it-all! I mean you're just REALLY INTELLIGENT. And I know you asked why I think that, but... I don't know really. But you seem to work really hard at uni from what you've said, and the language thing is just, WOW. When Sophie told me that English wasn't your first language, I completely didn't believe her at all.

And there are things like, I can't remember, a post aaages ago where you were considering the roots of this word (and I know you're Greek, so maybe it makes more sense to you) but I was just like 'OMG THIS GIRL IS SMART'. But I don't think anyone's ever thought you were showing off *hugs* Personally, anyway, I've always got the impression you do well cause you deserve it, and you work for it (whereas I coast like hell, for example).

xD I think it was because of the fanfiction; I couldn't get my head around the fact that someone only a bit older than me could write whole stories in a foreign language. Also you make far fewer spelling or grammar mistakes than a lot of my English friends, heh.

One day I will be fluent in Japanese!... maybe. I know how to say 'vodka'...

Hmmm, I really dunno how to make a coherent answer. I think you becoming my beta confirmed to me how smart you were, but I always thought you were smart before that. I dunno how to explain it but you've got that nice aura about you, you know? We all know I like to call you Moony because you're intelligent and a lover of grammar, and I imagine Remus to be like that :) Basically you're just smart but in a cute and endearing way like Remus! You're also I think organised in comments and posts which is something I envy :P

And when you became my beta I was basically floored by your brain because you wade through some of the bollocks that is my writing and make it sound better, not to mention pick up on awful typos I never seem to notice after proof-reading.

And you also seem busy with studies a lot yet you still manage to do things like write, beta, comment or whatever. You = superhero ;)
