I *knew* I'd regret it. Gah.

I updated from Windows Media Player 8 to Windows Media Player 10. It completely messed up my MP3 playlist. I had it arranged the way I wanted it: in alphabetical order by artist, the same artist's songs in alphabetical order, and duets etc. at the bottom in alphabetical order by song. Now I can try to arrange it the same way all I want, but when I turn WMP off and then back on it's back to messed-up state.

Grrr. *kills something*

That's what I get for updating something I'm perfectly satisfied with. Damn greedy me. And I don't see any "super" extras in WMP 10, either. *wails*

Would anyone of you happen to know a way to arrange the songs the way I want them, and then *keep* them that way?

Still wailing,
Anna.

Have you downloaded any other programs since WMP10? If not, the easiest solution is a restore which will delete WMP10 and give you back WMP8. Restore is just for programs, so you will not loose any files. If all goes fine, your playlist should be back to the way you had it.

I'm assuming you know how to do a restore...

...Actually, I don't know how to do a restore. But no, I haven't downloaded any programs WMP 10. If I do a restore, it won't affect any programs I installed *before* WMP 10, right?

Can you tell me how to do it? Thanks!

See ya,
Anna :)

I don't really have the time to explain that right now, but how about we both get online tonight and I'll talk you through it? That way, we'll make sure you do not loose anything important and you'll know what to do next time.

That's what I was going to suggest, do a system restore. But, just wondering? how did you organize the songs into play lists like that? What I do (illiterate me) is shove the songs in folders and then just play the folder(s) I want to listen to.

I'm actually wondering why you'd have it set up like that. I just put all the songs for a certain theme in a playlist and have it set to shuffle.

And I'd also suggest Winamp instead of WMP, mucho better!

Actually, that's because I never know what to do with a playlist. I like iTunes' way of doing it much better, because it doesn't wait for ME to tell it what songs should be in a playlist but ... *sigh*

I want to make sure I'm listening to all my songs, so shuffle doesn't work for me. I'm a control-freak about that.

*shudders* Winamp gives me bad memories from a long time ago, I couldn't figure it out. (Then again, I was only 11.) But anyways, I'll be satisfied as long as I've got WMP 8 back.

See ya,
Anna.

When you right click on an mp3 file, there's an option "Add To Playlist". From there you can create a playlist with any songs you want. And, in WMP 8, choose in what order you want them to play, too.

See ya,
Anna.

WMP 10 is really an awful prog. But then, you already figured that out, right? (I never upgraded from WMP 9, and use *that* only for watching wmvs--WMP takes up heaps of system resources when you run it, and it's really better to get a player that is "slimmer".)

I highly recommend dBpowerAMP if you want a really good music player (it plays mp3 and wav by default, but you can add extensions to let it play wmv, mp4, ogg, ape, and pretty much any other audio file you can think of, as you need it). It won't organize them *quite* the way you seem to want it--does it by artist, if you like (pretty customizable, if you ask me), but the songs don't *really* stay in alphabetical order if you have any sort of filter on what's being played (take the filter off, though, and it's back to purely alphabetical). The best thing about it is the multiple genre options. I can set a song to being Celtic, Contemporary, Folk, and Instrumental all at once (that applies to Paddy McCarthy, by The Corrs, btw), and can filter my playlist by any one of those specific things (using checkboxes Include All, Exclude All, and Indeterminate for each genre). It will write the mp3 tag to show the very first of those genres alphabetically as the one on the tag, but within the player it will remember all of them. I particularly use the tags to help me play music by mood--I have a melancholy playlist for when I'm sad, a meditative and relaxing one for calming and going to sleep, a Sabbath playlist for Christian music only, a Contemporary playlist for if I want energy music, etc. I *love* it and just wish more people knew about it. It even works with the FoxyTunes extension in Firefox, if you configure it right, though the minibar controller, used at the top of a page, is far better. It's amazing . . .

I ought to take a look at that. And then find out a way to un-install WMP.

I don't know about uninstalling, but I suppose you could go to Program Files and delete the Windows Media Player folder altogether, with all its contents.

Would save you some space, anyway *shrug*

See ya,
Anna.

The multiple genre options sound very cool! Though, as you know, I'm too lazy to get into any other programs right now :p I'll keep it in mind, though. Thanks :)

Anna.

Lol, I thought I was too. But then I tried adding everything in, and I liked it so much . . . I stuck with it. And haven't looked back since. Kind of like trying to go back to IE as your regular browser after you've used Firefox. IE worked great when that was what you were used to. But once you tried Firefox, there was *no* turning back. It was simply far better. *g*
