All hail me!
Nov. 30th, 2006 01:38 amI fixed my laptop all by myself. Go me.
It drove me crazy first, though. I thought I'd get myself to MS-DOS from that recovery CD-ROM and delete some files in order to make space to install Windows on top of the previous installation. So I did.
I typed "DIR", to see the contents of my disk. Didn't work. Tried it tenths of times. Nothing.
Then I tried entering Program Files or other folders that are typically there. Access denied.
I don't know how much time I spent playing with the commands until I thought about trying chkdsk again. This time, it finished checking. I rebooted, it took me to a screen I'd seen several times already, I chose "Last known correct settings", and... it worked! To my big surprise and relief. *thanks God*
Ran anti-virus and anti-spy programs; it was clean. Turned it off, watched C.S.I., turned it back on. As my posting here still proves, it's still working. Though it ran a chkdsk on its own before loading Windows... and it came up with massive errors, files missing, mislocated, I don't know what. I'm hoping this kinda fixed them, because I'm not sure how to fix my Windows installation.
Curious fact: Firefox doesn't work. When Windows loaded, the desktop shortcut was gone. So was the Start Menu shortcut. And when I tried to access it directly from the Mozilla Firefox folder, it still didn't work. I'm now on IE.
Think Firefox might have to do something with my computer problems? It *had* been a little unstable lately, but I had thought it had to do with MegaUpload and RapidShare, from where I'd been downloading the telenovelas - it usually failed when I visited these sites.
My other programs (at least, those I checked) seem to be working fine.
Next step: Backup. Tomorrow. I promise. I already burned a couple of La Usurpadora episodes I had. Must empty the thing a bit more - at least get it to 2 empty GBs and then defrag. It might help.
The only difficult one on the backing up is The Sims. You see, I've installed the Superstar expansion, but my Superstar CD doesn't work anymore. So, if I lost the installation, I'd be losing Superstar completely. And it's my favourite expansion pack.
I think I'll burn the folders to a DVD just as they were installed, and, when it's time... we'll see. I'll manage to find my way around it; when I was 12, I managed to make The Sims work on my computer without needing to insert the CD, and apparently, without even installing it - because I remember that whenever I called up the menu, the options available weren't "Play" and "Uninstall", but "Install" XD What can I say? I've always been a miracle worker regarding PCs.
(Now watch as this laptop stops working again, just to prove me wrong.)
Regarding RL, I have a LOT of things to share with you, on which I have been procrastinating for centuries, but a) I'd rather leave this post computer-centric and b) I don't have time for them. Gotta go to bed - 7 hours of class tomorrow, eek!
Will see you around.
Anna :)
